biography
Graduating with an MA honours in Fine Art from Edinburgh University and College of Art in 1977, I have been involved in making art in various ways ever since. I have exhibited in London, Aldeburgh, Cumbria, Somerset and Dorset. In the early eighties I was proprietor of an Arts and Crafts Gallery in Coniston, Cumbria, showing my own work and that of other British artists and craftsmen. I have sailed the Atlantic and worked as a charter skipper in the Caribbean, painting to commission for guests and fellow sailors along the way. Life on the ocean had a great impact on the development of my art.
I moved to Dorset to teach art, which I did for 24 years, I left the classroom in 2013 to focus full time on my own art practice again, in my studio on the southern edge of Shaftesbury. This has led to exhibitions in galleries and arts centres, locally in Dorset and Somerset, as well as open studios held independently and as part of Dorset Art Weeks.
My creative practice does not stand still and I am now more interested in making non-objective abstract art than in recording from observation which was where I started, although the latter remains a healthy exercise.
The work I am currently engaged in is concerned with bold, intense colours and their relationship within shape and composition. Making collages, optical paper structures and acrylic paintings on canvas and paper, while exploring these qualities, is a delightful process for me, makes me smile, sing and dance. In a world of uncertainty, environmentally, socially and politically, if my work offers the viewer a little escape and a broad grin I am happy.
